Dental bone graft in Turkey: rebuild your jaw so an implant can hold.
After a tooth is lost, the bone underneath slowly shrinks. If too little is left, an implant has nothing solid to grip. A bone graft adds that bone back. At Elybe Clinic in Istanbul it is done under local anesthetic from €400, by the same team that later places your implant.
What is a dental bone graft?
A dental bone graft is minor mouth surgery that adds bone to the jaw where it has worn away, usually so a dental implant can be placed securely. Graft material is packed into the gap, covered with a protective membrane, and your body turns it into solid bone over 4 to 6 months. At Elybe Clinic it costs €400 to €1,200 depending on how much bone is needed.
- Why: implants need enough bone height and width to stay stable.
- Anesthesia: local, you are awake but feel no pain.
- Recovery: 2 to 3 days of swelling, back to work within days.
- Implant: placed 4 to 6 months later, sometimes the same day.
Bone grafting for dental implants: when is it needed?
You are more likely to need a graft if
- The tooth has been missing for a year or more.
- You had gum disease that damaged the bone.
- The tooth was removed after an infection or a difficult extraction.
- You have worn a removable denture for years.
Options without a graft
With slight bone loss, a shorter or narrower implant may be enough. For a full arch, All-on-4 tilts the back implants to use the bone that remains. For the upper back teeth, a sinus lift is a specific type of bone augmentation.
Types of bone grafts in dentistry
Tooth bone graft procedure, step by step
Bone graft surgery in the mouth usually takes 30 to 90 minutes, depending on its size.
3D scan
A CBCT scan measures the missing bone and guides the choice of graft.
Numbing
Local anesthetic numbs the area. You stay awake but feel no pain.
Grafting
The gum is opened, graft material is placed and a protective membrane goes on top.
Stitches
The gum is closed with stitches. You leave with written aftercare instructions.
Dental bone graft healing stages
How to speed up bone graft healing
- Stop smoking and vaping: it is the main cause of graft failure.
- Use ice packs on day 1 and sleep with your head raised.
- Eat soft, lukewarm food and chew on the other side.
- Rinse gently as prescribed; no spitting or straws for a few days.
When to call the clinic
- Fever or pus around the site.
- Pain that gets worse after day 3.
- Granules coming out in large amounts, or the membrane showing.
- Numbness that lasts more than a few days.

Dental bone graft questions, answered
A dental bone graft is minor surgery that adds bone to your jaw where it has worn away. It is usually done so a dental implant has enough bone, in height and width, to hold firmly.
Only if your jawbone is too thin or too short. This is common when a tooth has been missing for years or after gum disease. A 3D scan shows whether you need one; many patients do not.
Sometimes. If only a little bone is missing around the implant, both can be done in one surgery. If a lot of bone is missing, the graft must heal first and the implant is placed 4 to 6 months later.
The surgery itself does not hurt because it is done under local anesthetic. Expect swelling and soreness for 2 to 3 days, usually controlled with regular painkillers. Taking bone from your own chin makes recovery a little harder.
The gum closes in 1 to 2 weeks, but the new bone needs 4 to 6 months to become strong enough for an implant. Small grafts may be ready in 3 months; large rebuilds can take 6 to 9 months.
Do not smoke, keep the area clean as instructed, eat soft food on the other side and take all prescribed medication. Avoid pressing on the graft with your tongue or a denture. Healing cannot be rushed much, but these steps prevent setbacks.
At Elybe Clinic in Istanbul: €400 for a small Bio-Oss graft, €700 for a larger area, €800 using your own bone and €1,200 for a complex rebuild. In the US, the same grafts typically cost $400 to $5,000, and in the UK about £400 to £4,000.
Swelling, minor bleeding and short-term sensitivity are common. Less often, infection, an exposed membrane or a graft that only partly takes. Contact your clinic if you have fever, pus or pain that gets worse after day 3.
