Professional teeth whitening: a brighter smile in one visit, from €180.
Whitening at the dentist lightens the natural color of your teeth safely and much faster than store-bought products. This guide explains how it works, the results you can expect and what it costs. At Elybe Clinic in Istanbul, custom trays for touch-ups are included.
How does professional teeth whitening work?
Professional teeth whitening uses a peroxide gel, applied by a dentist in the office or worn at home in custom trays, to break down the stains inside tooth enamel and lighten the natural shade of your teeth. Most people gain 3 to 8 shades and keep the result for 1 to 3 years. At Elybe Clinic in Istanbul it costs €150 to €260, compared with $500 to $1,000 for in-office whitening in the US.
Options for whitening teeth compared
Many patients combine both: one in-office session, then trays to maintain the result (€260 at Elybe). A cleaning and polish (€60) removes surface stains but does not change the tooth's own color.
The teeth whitening procedure, step by step
Clean
Scaling and polishing remove tartar and surface stains first.
Protect
A barrier covers your gums and lips so the gel only touches teeth.
Whiten
The gel goes on and is activated by a light or laser in short cycles.
Soothe
A fluoride gel limits sensitivity, and your new shade is measured.
How white will my teeth get, and for how long?
What to expect
- Yellow stains from coffee, tea, wine and smoking respond best.
- Gray stains, such as from some antibiotics, only partly fade.
- Crowns, veneers and white fillings do not change color.
- Your shade is recorded before and after on a shade guide.
Teeth whitening maintenance
- Skip dark drinks, sauces and tobacco for 48 hours.
- Rinse with water after coffee or red wine.
- Do a touch-up with your trays for 3 to 4 nights once a year.
- Keep up professional cleanings once or twice a year.
Is teeth whitening safe?
Done by a dentist after an exam, whitening does not damage enamel. The most common side effect is short-lived sensitivity to cold. Unsupervised products bought online carry more risk of gum irritation and uneven results.
Not recommended
- Under 18.
- During pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- With untreated cavities or gum disease.
- With very worn enamel or a peroxide allergy.

Teeth whitening FAQs
After a cleaning, the dentist protects your gums and applies a peroxide gel to your teeth. The gel is activated with a light or laser in several short cycles. It breaks down the pigments that stain the enamel, so teeth look lighter by the end of the visit.
For a fast, noticeable change, in-office whitening by a dentist works best. Custom take-home trays give a similar result over about two weeks. Strips and toothpastes sold in stores work more slowly and lighten less.
At Elybe Clinic in Istanbul, in-office whitening costs €180, laser whitening €240 and take-home trays €150. In the US, in-office whitening usually costs $500 to $1,000; in the UK, about £300 to £800.
Usually 1 to 3 years. Results last longer if you limit coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco and do a short touch-up with your trays once a year.
Yes, when done after a dental exam. It does not damage enamel. The most common side effect is sensitivity to cold for a day or two. It is not recommended during pregnancy, under 18 or with untreated cavities or gum disease.
The treatment itself is not painful. Some people feel brief zings of sensitivity during or after the session. A fluoride gel at the end and a sensitivity toothpaste for a few days usually solve it.
No. Whitening gel only works on natural enamel, so crowns, veneers and white fillings keep their color. If you plan veneers, whiten first so the new veneers can be matched to your lighter teeth.
Avoid strongly colored food and drinks for 48 hours, rinse with water after coffee or wine, keep up regular cleanings, and use your custom trays for 3 to 4 nights once a year.
For information only, not a substitute for advice from a licensed dentist. Whitening is only done after a dental exam.
